What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a way of working with your unconscious mind to bring about change.

People often come to hypnotherapy when working with their willpower is not enough.

Willpower comes from your conscious mind. Your unconscious mind is a deeper place.

Your unconscious mind doesn’t really know about time. So if something happened once that got past your defences, and caused a reaction, such as a fear or phobia, or a deep hurt, years later you can find you are stuck with a pattern of behaviour that you don’t want anymore but don’t know how to shift.

Sometimes the cause is a one-off event. Other times it is a carpet of experience that affected the person we were at the time. In either event, as your unconscious mind is such a deep place, and doesn’t know about time, trapped emotions and unresolved experiences can stay with us and influence our lives, often in intrusive ways, without us understanding why or feeling we can change things.

A hypnotherapist is a bit like a detective facilitator working alongside your unconscious mind, which has all the answers, to help you let go of unresolved emotion.

The unconscious mind is a truly fascinating place. Think of it as the aspect of the mind which is under the surface: like the underside of an iceberg, hidden deep.

Hypnotherapy differs from talking therapies, as you experience therapy in a trance state, where the hypnotherapist talks directly to your unconscious mind.

A hypnotherapist has many tools s/he can use to both take you into that state and to work with you whilst there. A Hypnotherapist cannot do this without your permission; it simply won’t work. So trust and developing trust is an important part of the process.

What makes me different as a Hypnotherapist?

I am very familiar with trance states through my practice as a meditator and yoga practitioner & teacher over nearly 20 years.

I learnt meditation in India from a Sadhu who underwent traditional training, living in a cave for 12 years.

Back in the UK, I taught Yoga Nidra for nearly 10 years, which involves going through a hypnotic state, and found it incredibly beneficial for people.

I have had many experiences where I have journeyed to meet ancestors, inner children, and regressed to remember key moments that impacted me. This work on the self always brings surprises. One of the biggest is it’s not always necessary to relive an experience which upset us. Often we can get just as good results from repointing our mind in a positive direction whilst in the trance state, reducing the emotions, or even re-writing our memories! Our unconscious mind is the true source of creativity and healing.
